How Did Kanye West and Jay Z Beef Start

For a long time, Jay-Z and Kanye West were heralded as the #friendshipgoals, #bromance and #squadgoals of hip-hop, however, over the past couple of years or so rumours have swirled that it's all gone a bit pear shaped.

At the time of release, Jay-Z's album, 4:44, made headlines for a whole lot of reasons. From talking about his mother coming out as a lesbian to the widely-held belief it's a response to Beyoncé's bombshell album 'Lemonade', another angle which has caught attention is that it certainly seems he's having a dig at 'Ye on the alarmingly-titled track ' Kill Jay-Z'.

If anyone's confused and not sure what is really going on, here's a run-down of their famous friendship.

30 November 2018: Jay-Z releases 'What's Free' with Meek Mill and Rick Ross, and there are some pretty interesting lyrics that blatantly refer to Kanye West.

No red hat, don't Michael and Prince me and Ye,
They separate you when you got Michael and Prince's DNA,
I ain't one of these house n****s you bought,
My house like a resort, my house bigger than yours,
My spou ― c'mon, man ― my route better of course...

That line about the red hat is a reference to Kanye and Donald Trump's relationship and his 'Make America Great Again' hat, right?

He later raps this...

My hair free, carefree, n****s ain't near free.
Enjoy your chains, what's your employer name? With the hairpiece?

Maybe this is something to do with Trump's hair?

Soon after the track was released, Ja-Z took to Twitter to clarify that he and Kanye are still "brothers", and he simply doesn't want them to keep getting pitted against each other.

Here's a detailed timeline of Jay-Z and Kanye West's complicated friendship from the very beginning...

2001: Kanye West is a producer on one of Jay-Z's most successful albums: 'The Blueprint'. The song 'Izzo (H.O.V.A)' is also written and produced by Kanye.

2004: Jay-Z and his former partner of Roc-A-Fella records Damon Dash are initially reluctant to give Kanye a record deal – partly because they don't think he fits the mould of a gangsta rapper from the same background as them. As Time reports in 2005, Jay-Z said: "We all grew up street guys who had to do whatever we had to do get by. Then there's Kanye, who to my knowledge has never hustled a day in his life. I didn't see how it could work."

However, they change their minds, sign Kanye and in 2004 his critically acclaimed first album 'The College Dropout' is released.

2007: Kanye releases his third album 'Graduation'. One particularly honest song on the album was Big Brother which described his relationship with Jay. At the start, Kanye said how much he admires and looks up to Jay-Z and how when they first met he couldn't even bring himself to say hello (a quivering Kanye West is something I'm kind of struggling to imagine).

Anyway, the lyrics then throw a curveball as Kanye talks about their "sibling rivalry" and the fact he was pissed off when they both did songs with Coldplay. Who knew Chris Martin was so in demand in the rap community?

2009: After years of collaborating and being great pals, Kanye really shows his loyalty - and gets called a "jackass" by President Obama in the process – when he storms the MTV VMA stage to tell Taylor Swift that Beyoncé should have won the award, not her. Bey just looks on awkwardly.

2011: At no time did Kanye and Jay's friendship appear stronger than when they join forces to create the 'Watch the Throne' album. A critical success, merging of two genius lyricists and the ultimate display of #bromance, the album goes on to win seven Grammys and go platinum. The two then embark on a world tour where Beyoncé and Kanye's new girlfriend Kim Kardashian are seen supporting their men.

2013: Jay-Z hints at a 'Watch the Throne 2' in an interview with Zane Lowe and also speaks about his relationship with Yeezy.

"It's always been a 'Big Brother' thing and a respect thing," Jay-Z tells The BBC. "It's always a good experience." Naww.

2014: Despite the big show of unity put on by Bey, Jay and Kimye at the 'Watch the Throne' tour and various award shows, it is deemed slightly strange when the Carters are a no-show at Kanye and Kim's luxurious Italian wedding. Beyoncé shares photos of Kimye on Instagram in a tribute to the couple but doesn't attend.

Kris Jenner steps in (classic) and tells Australian radio she just "assumed they [Beyoncé and Jay-Z] were working" and that their appearance "was the last thing on anyone's mind".

Kanye later addresses the matter in an interview with GQ: "It doesn't even matter to me whatsoever, who would show up. Because the most important person to show up there, to me, was Kim."

2015: Despite the wedding absence, all seems good a year later when Beyoncé attends Kanye's Yeezy New York Fashion Week Show. Beyoncé is even pictured on the FROW next to Kim and baby North.

Kanye then takes matters even further when he claims in a radio interview that Beyoncé and Kim respect and love each other and that Queen Bey uses Kim as songwriting inspiration.

"They love each other, they respect each other," he tells The Breakfast Club."When Beyoncé is working on her album she has pictures of Kim on the wall because Kim represents powerful women. Kim plays 7/11 for our daughter."

2016: A photo of ultimate #squadgoals emerges after the MTV VMAs: Alicia Keys and Swiss Beatz, Beyonce and Jay-Z, Kim and Kanye and Cassie and Diddy.

Just a few months later, once again, Kanye throws us all off course when he slags off Jay-Z on stage during his 'Saint Pablo' tour. After Kim was the victim of an armed robbery in Paris, Kanye claimed Jay-Z never called to see how they were doing.

"Don't call me after the robbery and say 'how you feelin?' You wanna know how I'm feelin? Come by the house," he tells a packed crowd at his Seattle concert. "Bring the kids by the house. Like we're brothers. Let's sit down."

2017: After various tabloid claims, including Page Six suggesting Jay-Z can only tolerate West in "small doses", Jay's only actual response comes out in the 4:44 album on the song 'Kill Jay-Z'.

"You gave him 20 million without blinkin' He gave you 20 minutes on stage, f*** was he thinkin'? 'F*** wrong with everybody?' is what you sayin' But if everybody's crazy, you're the one that's insane." According to rap lyric translators Genius, the 20 million refers to a deal over Jay-Z's music streaming service Tidal and the 20 minutes on stage is about Kanye's rant last year. Shortly after the rant, Kanye was taken to hospital with exhaustion and cancelled the Saint Pablo tour.

Very shortly after Jay-Z's new album gives us food for thought on whether this is the end of the bromance, reports surface that Kanye has left Tidal over a dispute over money.

November 2017: Kanye announces that he's starting up a streaming service that will rival Jay-Z's Tidal. He submits a trademark application for a similar enterprise which would be dubbed Yeezy Sound.

The application states the trademark would be for the purposes of "streaming of music, audio, images, video and other multimedia content over the internet."

Sounds a lot like Tidal to us...

December 2017: Jay-Z finally addresses the pair's feud during his interview with The New York Times' T Magazine's executive editor Dean Baquet.

"I [talked to] Kanye the other day, just to tell him, like, he's my brother. I love Kanye. I do.

"It's a complicated relationship with us. Kanye came into this business on my label. So I've always been like his big brother. And we're both entertainers. It's always been like a little underlying competition with your big brother. And we both love and respect each other's art, too. So it's like, we both — everyone wants to be the greatest in the world. You know what I'm saying?"

May 2018: Kanye says his fall-out with Jay-Z started when he and Beyonce snubbed Kanye and Kim's wedding in 2014.

Speaking to Charlamagne Tha God on iHeartRadio's The Breakfast Club, he said: "I was hurt about them not coming to the wedding. I understand they were going through some things, but if it's family, you're not going to miss a wedding.

"I'm not using this interview to put out any negative things, but I gotta state my truth. You just start coming up with all type of crazy things in your head, like 'Why?'"

Kanye added that he's never actually asked Jay-Z why he and Bey skipped the wedding.

"I don't think I ever asked him that question, directly."
